Notable Achievements

  • An icon of inclusive education and related social changes in the country
  • Participated in the process of designing various key policies E. g.: The National Strategy for Growth and Poverty Reduction (I & II), the National Policy on Disability of 2004, the Persons with disabilities act of 2010, the National Strategy on Inclusive Education (2009-2017), and the National Social Protection Framework of 200o-2015.
  • Established focal points within the decision-making bodies and the media which made it easier for the Parliament of Tanzania to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights and Dignity for Persons with Disabilities without reservations;
  • Has been able to influence Some Civil Society Organizations to mainstream disability within their programs in their organizations;
  • Facilitated the official launch of the National Disability Policy of 2004;
  • Took a lead role amongst the Organizations for Persons with Disabilities in the new Constitution review process;
  • Influenced the Constitutional Review Commission to the effect of accommodating various concerns of Persons with Disabilities within the new draft Constitution of Tanzania;
  • In collaboration with UNDP in the year 2005 enabled Voters with Disabilities especially those with visual impairment to vote in secrecy through the introduction of tactile ballot papers.
  • ICD has been recognised as White Ribbon Alliance Chapter in Tanzania since December 2022
